Graeme Hyde began keeping birds 62 years ago and has since then developed a keen
interest in native Australian birds in the wild and in aviary or bird room. He progressed
from breeding canaries and budgerigars to keeping and breeding Australian finches and
small parrots.
Graeme was secretary of the Avicultural Society of Australia (ASA) for 18 years and is in his
32nd year as editor of the society’s monthly journal
Australian Aviculture. He edited the
celebrated book,
Australian Parrots: A Field and Aviary Study authored by renown
aviculturists, B.R. Hutchins and R.H. Lovell.
Graeme is a Life Member of the Avicultural Society of Australia and in 2005 was awarded a
Certificate of Achievement for 50 years Continuous Membership of the Society. His articles
on a wide range of avian subjects have been published in Australia, England, South Africa
and America.
He has been in demand as a speaker at both avicultural meetings and national
conventions in Australia. He was an invited overseas speaker at the American Federation
of Aviculture’s 1994 convention in Knoxville, Tennessee. Last year while on an overseas
trip with Margaret, his wife of 44 years, he took time out to present a color slide program
“Australia’s Beautiful Birds in Color in Field and Aviary” to a bird meeting in England and
two meetings in America – Parrots of the Hills, Fountain Hills, Arizona and the Avicultural
Society of America, Yorba Linda, Southern California.
In 1994 Graeme received an Avicultural Federation of Australia’s award for “Exceptional
Services to Aviculture” – the highest avicultural award in Australia.
